Dear rodrigo:
"Adam Smith, Esq." does not have and never will have a position on global warming, but I will observe that this April in New York has displayed positively the weirdest weathereven for such a normally changeable monthI've ever seen. For nearly three weeks, the temperature was stubbornly and drastically below normal, a streak only broken last week by a Nor'Easter that delivered nearly 9 inches of rain to Central Park in one day. Thank goodness Manhattan Island is largely granite.
It's hard to discern a theme uniting the March articlescome to think of it, we don't do theme monthsso let's plunge directly in. And at the end, as usual, I'll offer up the "newsletter-only" content, this month telling you about something in the works.
- Having waited for a great deal of inkand I mean a great dealto be spilled over the Famous Associate Salary Spike of early 2007, I collected my own thoughts about it in "What Does the Great Associate Salary Spike Really Mean?"
- Drawing on some thinking by Guy Beringer, senior partner at Allen & Overy, I asked whether profits per partner is really the proper measure of success.
- And in a tandem piece to that one, I reported the results of a poll on how you call feel about PPP as a benchmark: Suffice to say that by a 4 to 1 margin, you reject PPP. Out of nearly 100 respondents to the poll, only one lonely soul opted for the response that PPP "is accurate and highly informative." Inquiring minds want to know: Who are you?
- I summarized the premise of the new book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success in a piece entitled "Rising Star at 21? Beware" The author of Mindset, a Stanford psychology professor, informatively contrasts the "fixed" and the "growth" approaches to life and learning.
- Finally, if you've taken the least note of the remarkable trajectory of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe over the past decade or so, you'll want to read about my conversation with Ralph Baxter.
Now, for the newsletter-only content.
Some time next week I will have the privilege of announcing a conference to be held in early April, 2008 at the Georgetown University Law School, which will address the issue of access to the capital markets for US law firms. I've been working on this in conjunction with Prof. Larry Ribstein of the University of Illinois College of Law and Prof. Milton Regan of Georgetown, and I hope you'll be excited by the ideas we'll be floating.
Until next month, then: Thanks for reading, and remember that the editor/publisher is always in.
Best regards,
