| Terry Semel, bajo el fuego del Economist Posted: 13 May 2007 04:40 PM CDT  Un duro artículo de The Economist titulado "Out-Googled" y subtitulado como "Is Terry Semel the right man to lead Yahoo! against its nimbler rival?" cuestiona la trayectoria de Terry Semel, CEO de Yahoo!, y su habilidad para superar a un rival, Google, que le ha ganado por la mano en prácticamente todas las ocasiones en que se han enfrentado, y que en la actualidad marca una enorme diferencia en su trayectoria. Semel tiene ahora 64 años, la edad perfecta para, según el artículo, quitarse del medio y dar paso a una dirección más coherente con lo habitual en la industria: directivos con una fuerte base de conocimientos tecnológicos, como los de Google o Microsoft. La carera profesional de Semel, en cambio, estuvo centrada en una industria hoy tan cuestionada como la de los contenidos: antes de aterrizar en Yahoo!, ni siquiera utilizaba correo electrónico. Los intentos de Semel por convertir a Yahoo! en una compañía de medios no dieron el resultado adecuado, y su falta de vista a la hora de acometer adquisiciones estratégicas ha sido notable: consideró incluso comprar Google en 2002 por un precio de unos pocos miles de millones y se echó para atrás debido a que el precio le pareció elevado, decidiéndose en su lugar por Inktomi y Overture. Hoy el valor de Google supera los ciento cuarenta y cinco mil millones, en lo que habría sido una más que interesante plusvalía, mientras que las entonces prometedoras Inktomi y Overture languidecen ignominiosamente dentro de Yahoo!. De cara al futuro, la mayor parte ed los analistas parecen opinar que resulta completamente imposible para Yahoo! competir con Google en solitario, y que debe por tanto o bien encontrar un socio de mucha entidad - se ha hablado de eBay como una posibilidad - o intentar venderse a Microsoft al precio más alto posible (escribí un artículo sobre ese tema para Cinco Días el pasado viernes en el que además comparto página con Miguel de Reina, pero la proverbial habilidad de mi empresa de clipping para ignorarme lo ha dejado fuera y Cinco Días lo ha "escondido" en su web, así que no lo podré vincular hasta que tenga oportunidad de escanearlo).
No debe ser buena cosa que sea una publicación con el prestigio y el alcance de The Economist la que cuestione tu trayectoria como directivo y lo bueno de tu continuidad para tu empresa.
